A DEAL to extend the distinctive black-painted Port Hotel on Eastbourne seafront into the neighbouring property has been abandoned.
Peter Cadwallader of the 19-room Port Hotel wanted to buy the Atlanta Guest House, which has ten guest rooms.
Mr Cadwallader, the co-founder and managing director of Port Hotels Ltd, confirmed to the Eastbourne Reporter: “The deal is not proceeding.”
Yvette Cowderoy, co-owner of the Atlanta, confirmed that a deal was discussed and an amount settled on after an approach from Port but that it did not go ahead.
However, she said: “We are quite happy doing what we are doing.” Yvette and her husband Mark have run the Atlanta since 2008.
The reasons for scrapping the deal have not been disclosed.
The possible change to the building was discussed at last week’s conservation advisory group meeting at Eastbourne Borough Council, which was apparently unaware the deal was not going ahead.
Councillors and advisers had welcomed the application and approved of plans to remove the conservatory on the front of the Atlanta. There were also plans to install a rear lift in the Atlanta.
Mr Cadwallader describes the company on his LinkedIn profile: “Port Hotel is a British seaside hotel challenger brand. We aim to re-imagine what a seaside hotel should look and feel like.”
The hotel opened in May 2021, immediately standing out from the traditional hotel and guest houses on the seafront with its striking black façade.
