The type of personal information we collect

If you’re a visitor to this website we use some anonymous analytics tools to monitor traffic to the website. This tells us which pages are the most useful and help us prove the impact of our work to any partners and supporters. We want to reach as many people as possible, so knowing who is looking at our stuff is really helpful. All of the data collected in this way is completely anonymous – we don’t know your name, email address, or any other identifying details.

We run this site using WordPress, which also comes with a built-in analytics programme called Jetpack, which collects information about how many people looked at posts and from which countries – you can see their privacy policy here.

This data is held securely by WordPress and only accessed by Eastbourne Reporter staff using a secure password.

We currently collect and process the following information:

  • Names, email addresses and IP addresses

How we get personal information and why we have it

Most of the personal information we process is provided to us directly by you for one of the following reasons:

  • You have subscribed to receive our latest post
  • You have subscribed to our newsletter via Creative Mail
  • You have commented on one of our posts
  • You have donated to us (thank you very much!) via KoFi

We use the information that you have given us in order to send you the latest posts or newsletters and may occasionally contact you directly if we believe, as journalists, a comment requires further investigation or an interview request. You can say ‘no’ and withdraw your consent to us keeping your details at any time.

We do not share this information unless you request a password reset when relevant, when your IP address will be included in the reset email.

Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), the lawful basis we rely on for processing this information is having your consent. You are able to remove your consent at any time. You can do this by contacting news@eastbournereporter.co.uk

How we store your personal information

Your information is securely stored.

:: The data on website traffic and comments is held securely in WordPress, which can only be accessed by Eastbourne Reporter staff via a secure password.

You are free to unsubscribe at any time, either by using the unsubscribe function at the bottom of every post or newsletter or by contacting us directly.

:: The data from donations we collect to help fund our service is done through Ko-fi (which, in turn, uses Paypal)

All financial data is handled by these partners. Eastbourne Reporter does not see, store or collect any financial information on those who donate to us and this data is handled in accordance with these partners’ privacy policies.

The information Eastbourne Reporter is able to see from these partners is primarily limited to your name, email address, amount of donation, whether it is a one-off or recurring donation, and any message of support you leave us. We do not use any of this data in any way other than to send you a thank you for your contribution.

What about copyright?

Eastbourne Reporter reserves all copyright for any material created and used on this site, unless explicitly stated otherwise. You may not use, copy, or replicate any part of this site without our express permission.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
